What is a CSR?

A Certificate Signing Request (CSR) is a block of encoded text that contains information about the entity requesting the certificate and the cryptographic key that will be included in the certificate. The CSR is submitted to a Certificate Authority (CA) when applying for an SSL/TLS certificate.

A CSR typically includes the following information:

  • Common Name (CN): The fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for which you're requesting the certificate.
  • Organization (O): The legal name of your organization.
  • Organizational Unit (OU): The division or department within your organization.
  • Locality/City (L): The city where your organization is located.
  • State/Province (ST): The state/province where your organization is located.
  • Country (C): The two-letter country code where your organization is located.
  • Email Address: An email address to contact about this certificate.
  • Subject Alternative Names (SANs): Additional domain names to be protected by the certificate (for multi-domain certificates).

Why decode a CSR?

Decoding a CSR allows you to verify that all the information in your CSR is correct before submitting it to a Certificate Authority. This helps ensure that the SSL/TLS certificate you receive contains the correct information and works as expected for your domain(s).
